January 2018 -- The society is looking back on an exciting and successful year 2017 with three courses, nine webinars and a rapidly growing membership base. The latest course on hybrid imaging in oncology, which took place on December 14-15 in Vienna, was attended by over 150 participants from 44 countries and means another great success to the society.

The course aimed at last-year residents, general radiologists, nuclear medicine physicians and oncologists who want to update their knowledge on state-of-the-art hybrid medical imaging of cancer, with a focus on the latest technological advances and clinical applications. The expert faculty included nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists, as well as physicists, who provided lectures describing imaging pathways for oncological diagnosis, follow-up and treatment response assessment.

ESHI started its course season in early April with a satellite symposium subsequent to the European Molecular Imaging Meeting 2017 in Cologne/Germany dedicated “Evolving hybrid imaging into clinical practice”. Held in collaboration with the European Society of Molecular and Functional Imaging in Radiology (ESMOFIR).

Early last fall another course, jointly organised by ESHI, the European School of Radiology (ESOR) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), even had to move to a bigger location due to higher than expected demand. In line with its commitment to education and its particular focus on promoting hybrid imaging, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) decided to lift the original attendance cap of 100 places for the fully subsidised course, enabling more participants to learn about this important field of radiology. In addition, 12 participants from low and middle-income countries were able to take advantage of a joint sponsorship package from the ESR and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). In the end, 157 attendees from 34 countries attended the course. Overall ESHI has given grants to more than 300 young radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians in 2017.

The course year was concluded with an ESHI preparation course for the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR) under the umbrella of ESOR, which took place in the ESR Learning Centre in Vienna.

Last year ESHI held nine educational webinars on hybrid imaging, which are free of charge for members and in addition, past webinars can be watched on demand. The webinars feature prominent experts in the field of hybrid imaging, which share their knowledge about various modalities and subspecialties related to the fusion of nuclear medicine and radiology as well as molecular imaging. In 2017 almost to 1,000 professionals from 81 countries have registered for the ESHI webinars.

ESHI has seen a constant rise in membership since its foundation in March 2016 and is confident that this will continue in 2018. Since the end of 2016, membership has more than doubled and the society is proud to announce that it currently has 1135 members making it the fastest growing hybrid imaging network in Europe.

"It has not even been two year's since the society's foundation and I'm delighted how membership has grown. This proves to us that there is major interest in hybrid medical imaging and in our endeavour to offer specialized training in this field. In 2018 we will take another important step by introducing a European diploma in hybrid imaging and I am convinced that this will mean another success for ESHI," said ESHI president Katrine Riklund from Umeå/SE.

Preparations for future courses and webinars are at full swing at the ESHI office and will soon be announced on the society webpage.
