Sudan, Russia sign nuclear power energy deal

The final agreement that will bring nuclear energy to Sudan by the end of this year was signed in the Russian capital, Moscow, yesterday between Sudan’s electricity ministry and Russia’s nuclear power agency, the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported.

State Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity, Yousif Hamza, signed the agreement with Alexey Likhachov, the director general of Russia’s Atomic Energy Corporation, whilst on a visit to Moscow to participate in the Annual Nuclear Power Exhibition along with delegates from a number of other countries and international  companies operating in the fields of power and the building of nuclear reactors.

In 2012, Sudan informed the International Atomic Energy Agency of its intention to pursue nuclear technology that would generate electricity and would meet the increasing demand of the country’s growing population.

Last year, Sudan also signed a deal with the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) to increase its current 3,000 megawatt annual power generation significantly over the next few years. The latest deal forms part of Sudan’s 2017-2031 strategic plans to diversify energy resources
