Haiti - Social : Haiti, 2nd country with the highest rate of modern slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean
Modern slavery, understood as a set of legal concepts referring to situations of exploitation that a person cannot reject or abandon due to threats, violence, coercion or deception and which includes forced labor, debt bondage, forced marriage, slavery and similar practices, is a phenomenon that currently affects nearly 50 million people, 54% of whom are children

According to the 2023 report, on the prevalence of modern slavery prepared by the human rights organization Walk Free, in Latin America and the Caribbean, countries where rates of The highest rates of modern slavery are Venezuela and Haiti, with 270,000 and 94,000 people in this condition respectively.

Venezuela and Haiti are the two countries where modern slavery is most accentuated with a score given by Walk Free of 9.5 and 8.2 respectively. The Dominican Republic has a score of 6.6. On the other hand, the countries of the Americas where modern slavery is least accentuated are Chile (3.2), Uruguay (1.9) and Canada (1.8).



When it comes to the response of governments to combat this situation, the United States, Canada and Argentina are the ones with the best response. According to the organization, these countries are best prepared to combat modern slavery thanks to their ability to identify and treat victims, the existence of legal mechanisms to address the problem, and national and regional coordination.
