VIENNA, May 9 (KUNA) -- Creating a Middle East without weapons of mass destruction (WMD) will lead to peace and security in the region, said a representative for the GCC states to a meeting on the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Tuesday.
This statement was delivered by Deputy Permanent Delegate to the UN headquarters in Vienna, first Secretary Abdullah Al-Obaidi during the first preparatory meeting for the conference to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 2020.
Implementing the NPT tenets was the responsibility of all members who signed the treaty which aim at protecting the world from WMD, said Al-Obaidi, adding that nuclear facilities in the region should be inspected to make sure that not one country has the capability to launch a devastating attack.
The Kuwaiti diplomat showcased to the meeting the GCC efforts in implementing the NPT, saying that from 2010 to 2015, the GCC made sure to promote efforts to clear the world from destructive weapons.
The NPT was adopted on June 12, 1968 as an effort to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The treaty took effect on March 5, 1970. Several review conferences were held since 1995; however, there are still countries that did not sign the NPT. (end) amg.gta
